Environmental Sustainability Approaches in Youth Work
Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union
Three participants from Proutist Universal Malta took part in a one-week Erasmus+ training course in Latvia from August 10 to 18, 2025 (including travel days). The project focused on environmental sustainability in youth work, with workshops and activities designed around the “4 R’s” – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Day 1: On the first day of the project, we started the day with icebreaker games to get to know the participants from the other countries, including a scavenger hunt around the area. In the evening session we then learnt about the Youthpass certificate, specifically about the Competence Model for Youth Workers (YOCOMO) system which is used to indicate the 9 different competence areas tackled during Erasmus+ Training Courses.
Day 2: The second day of the project started with an introduction on the topic of Sustainability. Each participating organisation presented a brief overview of youth work in their respective country and some information about their organisation. During the evening, we explored the surrounding nature with a hike along the river, ending in a beautiful sandy beach along the Baltic shore.
Day 3: In the following days of the project, we are going to discuss each of the “4 R’s” individually (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and how they can be applied to our youth work. Today we started with REFUSE – we worked in small groups to discuss methods of refusing waste related to transport and to our lifestyle. The first of two intercultural nights was held in the evening, where the Maltese team showcased our culture and food to the other participants through an interactive group quiz and the sharing of snacks and drinks from our country. We also tried food and dances from some of the other participating countries.
Day 4: On the 4th day, the participants of the project discussed how they can REDUCE waste. The aim of the morning workshop was to create colourful eye-catching posters to share the topic with our youth centres. During the next practical sessions, we took a tour of our accommodation (Butterfly House) and we discussed ways how to reduce electricity, water and heat waste in the building. In the evening, the second Intercultural Night took place. We experienced the food, culture and dances of the remaining half of the participating countries.
Day 5: Today we learnt about how we can effectively RE-USE items in our youth centres to be more sustainable. We also started working on a short video and digital posters to spread the topic to our youths. The afternoon was a free session, and we explored the nearby city of Liepaja.
Day 6: The programme for today consisted of outdoor sessions in Pavilosta. We started the day with a walking tour around the town, where our Latvian facilitators taught us about its history and interesting sights. We then had a session in the park about RECYCLING. We shared how recycling works in our countries and then we came up with a recycling system for our youth centre. The day ended with a visit to the Pavilosta Local History Museum.
Day 7: We started the final day of the project with a personal reflection session where we individually thought about how we can implement the “4 R’s” to reduce waste in our daily life. In the evening, we concluded the Training Course with a screening of the dissemination videos and posters we produced in the previous days and we said goodbye to each other.
