Yuki Hattori volunteers with Proutist Universal Malta to make difference

Yuki Hattori, a University of Nanzan undergraduate student from Japan has been living in Malta to learn English while doing volunteering service works with the non-governmental organisation.

Hattori joined the local voluntary organisation Proutist Universal Malta to help people in July 2022.

“Lessons in my language school finishes at morning, so I want to try anything to do,” Hattori said. “In addition, leader of the organization was kind to me though I could not speak English fluently. I thought I can improve my English skills while doing volunteering.”

Job Plus, Malta’s public employment service, approved Hattori to do volunteering works as the Volunteer management coordinator with the Proutist Universal Malta.

“My goal is to know about real Malta,” Hattori said. “When I just study abroad in Malta, I do not know everything. Though doing volunteer or talking with people I meet people there. I want to know Maltese culture, history and society. This is my goal. In the future, it will make me better.

Hattori said she likes to do volunteering to help needy people.

“I like volunteering because I can interact with various people and I can learn about social problem, Hattori said. “Volunteering and social problems are associated. It’s important for me to know social situation through volunteering.”

Hattori said she found about the organisation at the University of Malta.

“I went to the University of Malta and I found the poster,” Hattori said. “I thought if I go to the university, I can get something good information. And then, I contacted the organization by email.”

Hattori said she will work as an intern and volunteer for three months. She participates in the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange cofounded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

I like discussions,” Hattori said. “I do not have opportunities to talk about one topic with overseas people so far. This is good chance to think about social and expand my insight.”

Hattori said she likes Malta because it is place to relax

“Compare my country, everything in Malta is slow,” Hattori said. “People have spacious in their mind, so people take the time with people, and interact with people importantly. Malta is the place that is comfortable to live in.”
